Sabrina Carpenter makes music for herself and for her fans—not for her pearl-clutching haters.
The pop singer has gotten plenty of backlash for her Man’s Best Friend album covers, the first which showed her on all fours, her hair being pulled by a man in a suit. But the criticism regarding her provocative stage persona—from her hot costumes to her dance moves and flirty lyrics—is nothing new, and she also really doesn’t care.
“It is not for the pearl clutchers. The album is not for any pearl clutchers, no,” the 26-year-old told Gayle King in a CBS Mornings interview.
“But I also think that even pearl clutchers can listen to an album like that in their own solitude and find something that makes them smirk and chuckle to themselves,” she added.
Carpenter noted that critics tend to get caught up with the sexuality of her songs, but really, there is so much more to her music. It’s powerful, it’s vulnerable, and sometimes it’s just pure fun.
She said: “Sometimes people hear the lyrics that are really bold and they go, I don’t wanna sing this in front of other people! It’s TMI. But I think about being at a concert with however many young women I see in the front row that are screaming at the top of their lungs with their best friends, and you can go, oh we can all like… sigh of relief, like this is just fun, and that’s all it has to be.”
