The first few episodes of the first season of Outlander: Blood of My Blood carry a special significance for the cast and crew of the franchise. Episode 4, in particular, came with a dedication at the end: “In Loving Memory of our Beloved Friend and Colleague, Brian McCardie.”

McCardie was a veteran Scottish actor with decades of experience, and he appeared in both the original Outlander series and the new prequel show. McCardie passed away at the age of 59 at home in 2024 from an aortic dissection, a condition in which a tear occurs in the inner layer of the body’s main artery.
Going back to an episode of Eastenders in 1989, McCardie’s body of work included roles in movies such as Rob Roy and Speed 2: Cruise Control as well as Showtime’s Shameless. He first joined the Outlander universe in 2015 when he was cast as Sir Marcus MacRannoch, a manor owner who helps Claire (Caitríona Balfe) break Jamie (Sam Heughan) free from Wentworth Prison in season one.
Given it was such a small part, the showrunners must have felt comfortable recasting him in a completely new role in the same world and timeline. In Blood of My Blood, he played the ruthless Isaac Grant, one of the only lairds that the MacKenzie brothers seem to genuinely fear insulting. He also comes to employ Henry Beauchamp, who has traveled back in time through the stones from the 20th century, as his new solicitor.
His sister, Sarah, shared a message to X shortly after his death on April 28, 2024, writing, “A wonderful and passionate actor on stage and screen, Brian loved his work and touched many lives, and is gone much too soon.”
His representatives, United Agents, also issued a statement, at the time, per Deadline: “We are shocked and so deeply saddened by the tragic news of Brian’s sudden death. He was an actor of such great talent who we were lucky to represent, and our thoughts are very much with his family and friends at this difficult time.”
Blood of My Blood producers Matthew Roberts and Maril Davis told Entertainment Weekly in May that they have no plans to recast the role.
