Jude Law took a meticulous approach while portraying Vladimir Putin in his latest role.
The 52-year-old actor took on the role of the President of Russia in Olivier Assayas’ The Wizard of the Kremlin, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival on Sunday. Law described his portrayal of Putin as “a character in a much larger story.”
Law, who underwent a dramatic transformation for the role, explained to AP why he accepted the role, saying, “I felt safe in the hands of Olivier. This is a story that was going to be told intelligently with nuance and consideration.
“We weren’t looking for controversy for controversy’s sake,” Law added. “We weren’t trying to define anything about anyone.”
The film is based on Giuliano da Empoli’s popular novel of the same name, which tells the story of Putin’s rise to power through the eyes of a fictional advisor named Vadim Baranov, played by Paul Dano. The narrative spans from the tumultuous post-Soviet era of the early 1990s to 2014.
Dano’s character draws inspiration from real-life political strategist Vladislav Sourkov, widely considered the architect of Putin’s tightly controlled political system.
The plot primarily centers on Dano’s character, detailing his own ascent through political maneuvering and the system he helped establish.
“The wizard is the person who is in the background, so there’s a casting of a spell that is happening,” Dano explained.
The Wizard of the Kremlin is destined to ignite controversy as Russia‘s three-year battle in Ukraine continues to rage.
Efforts to end the violence through a ceasefire and conclude Europe’s most devastating conflict since World War II with a comprehensive peace agreement have reached an impasse despite intensive diplomatic initiatives.
“The film is very much about how modern politics, 21st-century politics were invented,” Assayas said. “What’s going on right now is not only terrifying but it’s even more terrifying by the fact that we have not found the answer.”

The book was written before Russia‘s comprehensive invasion of Ukraine, leading Da Empoli to maintain the idea that exploring an earlier period remains “right.”
“It’s still relevant today, three years later, under different circumstances,” da Empoli said.
Assayas noted in his director’s statement that it “is not a film about the rise of one man – nor is it about the force with which power is imposed, or the reinvention of a nation that is both modern and archaic, once again under the yoke of totalitarianism.
“Grounded in actual, contemporary events, it is instead a meditation on modern politics — or rather, the smokescreens behind which it now conceals itself: cynical, deceptive, and toxic.”
He continued, “The Wizard of the Kremlin is not so much a political film as it is a film about politics – and the perversity of its methods, which now hold us all hostage.”
The U.S. release date for The Wizard of the Kremlin remains unconfirmed.
