The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights has achieved a monumental milestone, becoming the first song in Spotify’s history to surpass five billion streams. This unprecedented feat has sparked widespread celebration among fans, who are heralding the track as a defining anthem of the decade. As the artist continues his After Hours til Dawn tour, fans are taking a moment to appreciate the lasting appeal of this synth-driven hit. But what makes Blinding Lights a longtime chart-topper? Read on to uncover the story behind the tune’s record-breaking journey and why it resonates with listeners worldwide.

The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights continues to dominate music charts

Fresh off its recent spot on Billboard’s Top Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs of the 21st Century chart, The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights has now made music history. The 2019 hit is officially the first song ever to reach an unprecedented five billion streams on Spotify, a milestone it hit just eight months after becoming the first song to reach four billion streams on the platform.

The streaming service confirmed the monumental achievement just a few days ago. The company’s announcement read, “On August 31st, 2025, The Weeknd’s ‘Blinding Lights’ became the first song to reach 5 billion streams on Spotify.”

The Weeknd, born Abel Tesfaye, 35, took a moment to celebrate the record with his vast fanbase. The four-time Grammy winner shared the news on his Instagram Stories on Sunday as he prepared for his concert in Houston, Texas. The show was part of his ongoing After Hours til Dawn tour, which began in May and is set to conclude in San Antonio, Texas, on September 3.

Blinding Light’s journey to this new record follows a previous landmark achievement. In January 2024, the song became the first to reach four billion streams on Spotify. At the time, The Weeknd released a statement about the milestone, saying, “I’ll never stop being humbled by anything I create making its way to millions of people let alone billions!” He added, “I’m so thankful this song makes people feel a way that they keep going back to listen.”

The tune is also one of The Weeknd’s 28 songs with a home in Spotify’s Billions Club, which is more than any other artist, according to Billboard.

Why the world can’t stop streaming Blinding Lights

Blinding Lights has held onto its chart-topping status for years, thanks to its seamless fusion of retro and modern sounds, expert production, and The Weeknd’s unmistakable delivery. Released in November 2019 as the second single from his fourth studio album, After Hours, the track immediately resonated with audiences worldwide. Its 1980s-inspired synthwave vibe, paired with a hook that’s impossible to forget, struck the perfect balance of nostalgic and contemporary — winning over listeners across generations.

The song’s early chart run was nothing short of historic: it reigned at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for four weeks and became the first song ever to remain in the top 10 for an entire year. Its influence only deepened over time, and in November 2021, it overtook Chubby Checker’s 1958 classic The Twist on Billboard’s Greatest of All Time Hot 100 chart. That momentum carried into the streaming era, where Blinding Lights shattered back-to-back Spotify records, first crossing four billion plays before climbing to an unprecedented five billion streams.

Blinding Lights shines at the MTV, iHeartRadio, and Billboard Awards

Despite its massive success and cultural dominance, Blinding Lights never earned The Weeknd a Grammy nomination — a decision that sparked controversy among fans and critics alike. The snub became one of the most talked-about moments in Grammy history, raising questions about the Recording Academy’s selection process.

Although Blinding Lights was left out of Grammy contention, it swept up recognition elsewhere. The track won Video of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2020, Song of the Year at the iHeartRadio Music Awards in 2021, and earned Top Hot 100 Song and Top Radio Song at the Billboard Music Awards in 2021.

Still, The Weeknd’s career has not been without Grammy recognition. He has taken home four awards in other categories, including Best Urban Contemporary Album for his 2015 breakthrough Beauty Behind The Madness and Best R&B Performance for Earned It, his sultry ballad from the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack. In 2017, he earned another Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album with Starboy, further solidifying his reputation as a global superstar. More recently, in 2022, he added a fourth win with Best Melodic Rap Performance for his collaboration with Kanye West on the track Hurricane.
