Beloved actor known for role in ‘Dances With Wolves’ dead at 73

Beloved actor Graham Greene, perhaps best known for his role in “Dances With Wolves,” has died.

He was 73.

“He was a great man of morals, ethics and character that will be eternally missed,” Greene’s agent Michael Greene told Deadline. “You are finally free. Susan Smith is meeting you at the gates of heaven.

Deadline also noted that Greene was revered as “a trailblazing Canadian First Nations actor who opened doors for Indigenous actors in Hollywood.” The outlet said that Greene, who was born on the Six Nations Reserve, worked a series of odd jobs before giving acting a try.

Greene made his television debut in 1979 in the series “The Great Detective,” and his first movie role came in 1983’s “Running Brave.”

But his biggest role and his breakout came when he played “Kicking Bird,” in Kevin Costner’s “Dances With Wolves” in 1990. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his work there.

“Heartbroken,” actor Lou Diamond Phillips wrote on X. “Terribly saddened to hear fo the passing of Graham Greene at only 73. From Wolf Lake to Longmire, we had a beautiful relationship. An Actor’s Actor. One of the wittiest, wiliest, warmest people I’ve ever known. Iconic and Legendary. RIP, My Brother.”

Greene went on to land roles in some major movies including “Maverick,” “Die Hard with a Vengeance,” “The Green Mile,” “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” and “Molly’s Game.”

Most recently, per Deadline, Greene had roles in two of Taylor Sheridan’s Paramount+ projects: “1883” and “Tulsa King.”
