The first trailer for Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Wuthering Heights has dropped, leaving fans with one major complaint.
Based on Emily Brontë’s classic novel, the upcoming film stars Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff and Margot Robbie as Catherine ‘Cathy’ Earnshaw.
Written, directed and produced by Fennell, the film also stars Adolescence actor Owen Cooper, who plays a young Heathcliff, as well as Saltburn star Alison Oliver, Magpie’s Shazad Latif, Hong Chau, and House of the Dragon star Ewan Mitchell.
Released yesterday, a striking new teaser trailer for the film gave us a glimpse at the cast while teasing a rather steamy relationship between Cathy and Heathcliff.
Fans of the novel took to the comment section on Instagram to share their thoughts on the new teaser, with many saying it just doesn’t seem like Wuthering Heights.

“Did you read the same book as me because honestly it doesn’t look like it,” questioned one fan, while another said: “Need to cleanse my eyes and senses by rereading the book after this teaser. PLS NO.”
Another puzzled viewer quipped: “Did we read the same book? And most importantly, where is Kate Bush?!”
“This doesn’t look like the book at all,” wrote one sceptic, while another said: “Doesn’t look like the same book that I cried reading to again and again.”
Meanwhile, some fans of the book took to the comments section to voice their opinion on what Brönte would think of the film.

“Emily Brontë, sweetie, I’m so sorry,” penned one concerned book fan, while another said that Brönte would be “doing somersaults in her grave”.
Some were more excited by the teaser than others, with one Instagram user saying: “Oh my god. You don’t understand. I AM SO EXCITED HELLO.”
“Low-key I love this? …there is so much NOT said in the book, and we have to fill in the blanks. I also feel like there’s yet to be a movie where Cathy is as extreme as Heathcliff… because she is,” one commenter said in defence of the trailer.
Wuthering Heights is released in cinemas on Valentine’s Day 2025.
