Fashion designer and billionaire Giorgi Armani has died at the age of 91. His company has confirmed the sad news as tributes flood in for the fashion icon. He spent a brief stint in hospital earlier this year, forcing him to miss the Armani shows at Milan Fashion Week for the first time in the label’s history.
His company and family released a statement on Thursday (September 4), which read: “In this company, we have always felt like part of a family. Today, with deep emotion, we feel the void left by the one who founded and nurtured this family with vision, passion, and dedication. But it is precisely in his spirit that we, the employees and the family members who have always worked alongside Mr. Armani, commit to protecting what he built and to carrying his company forward in his memory, with respect, responsibility, and love.”
Armani told The Guardian in January 2025: “Age is undoubtedly a factor to contend with” but said he would “continue as long as my health and energy permit”, admitting “taking a step back in the near future” would be “inevitable”.
Now it has been confirmed that Armani’s funeral chamber in Milan will be open from 9am to 6pm on Saturday, September 6 and Sunday, September 7 for members of the public to pay their respects. However, the funeral will be held privately in accordance with Armani’s wishes.
Armani held the roles of chairman, CEO and creative designer of the fashion brand, which was preparing for its 50th anniversary this month.
He was used to running a company which turned over around £2billion each year, but Armani’s health had sadly deteriorated in recent years. In 2021 at his first live show after the Covid-19 pandemic, he showed off a scar on his arm from surgery after suffering a fall at the cinema.
Better known as Re Giorgio or King Giorgio in English, he was renowned for his hands-on approach to the business and even fixed his models’ hair as they headed out onto the catwalk at fashion shows.
