Music Legend Calls out Green Day: ‘Billie-Joe’s a Little P—’

On this day in 1972, Elvis Presley revealed plans for a live concert in Hawaii that would reach audiences via satellite, but the historic moment in music history could have been a disaster.

According to Graceland’s official website, the King of Rock and Roll held a press conference to promote the event while performing in Las Vegas, Nevada, on September 4, 1972. A second press event was held in Hawaii at the Hawaiian Hilton Village in November 1972, according to a Graceland blog.

The Hawaii concert was historic as it marked the first time a solo artist’s performance would be broadcast worldwide. Fears of a potential live disaster led to production taking extensive precautions to ensure the show ran flawlessly.

Each moment of the concert was rehearsed down to the smallest detail, and the rehearsal footage was taped. Presley performed the same songs, in the same order, wearing the same costume, in case of any unforeseen issues.

How did ‘Aloha From Hawaii’ prevent technical glitches?

The Graceland blog explained, “Elvis arrived in Hawaii on January 9, 1973, to begin rehearsals. Naturally, such a big production needed a few back-up plans and extra precautions.”

“Elvis had two of the exact same jumpsuits made for the show, including one to wear in the dress rehearsal on January 12. In fact, that dress rehearsal was also filmed, just in case there were issues with the satellite broadcast and the rehearsal show needed to be broadcast instead.”

Reportedly, when Presley took the stage, the taped concert was played at the same time in the control room. Therefore, if there was a technicality, a switch could be made between the live show and its taped version without viewers knowing the difference.

The show’s producer, Marty Pasetta, shared the difficulties in bringing the event to the small screen with the Elvis Information Network, citing that a lot of them had to do with Presley’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker, who reportedly wanted complete control over the production. He explained, “Elvis said to me, ‘The Colonel controls my business. I control my creativity and my music, and my show. He has nothing to say about it.'”

Where was ‘Aloha From Hawaii’ broadcast?

The Elvis History Blog reports that the special was broadcast in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, the Philippines, South Vietnam, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico, and the United States, and 28 countries in Europe. However, the special did not air in Africa, South America, the Middle East, or South Asia.

However, while Aloha From Hawaii has become iconic among Presley fans, critics were divided. The New York Times called the performance “shmaltz.”

They wrote, “His white jumpsuit costume is adorned, in jeweled studs, with American eagles. His fingers are clogged with flashy rings. His act includes tossing scarves, dabbed in sweat from his chest, to aging teeny hoppers.”

In contrast, Rolling Stone reported the concert was “true brilliance.” They said Presley “still had an absolute command of the stage and his singing voice” as he churned through hits such as “See See Rider,” “Burning Love,” “Something,” “My Way,” “An American Trilogy,” and “Can’t Help Falling in Love.”

Aloha From Hawaii was filmed to raise funds for the Kui Lee Cancer Fund. Lee, who died at 34 from the disease, was honored by Presley during the performance when he sang his song “I’ll Remember You.”

Fans were not given a specific price for tickets. However, the more they donated, the better their seats were.

Elvis Presley continued to tour until his death in August 1977 at age 42, yet the Aloha From Hawaii concert remains a defining moment in his career, one that fans continue to celebrate today.
