Houston rapper and actor Tobe Nwigwe is having some fun with celebrity friends after challenging them to pronounce his full Nigerian name.
Nwigwe was joined by his mother in an Instagram post on Thursday, in which they both judged videos of his friends attempting to pronounce his full Nigerian name correctly, with some passing and others failing. Some celebrities who took on the challenge included NBA All-Star Stephen Curry, Grammy winner Erykah Badu, Australian singer-songwriter Sia and Nigerian-American mixed martial artist Kamaru Usman.

As each celebrity took a turn pronouncing “Tobechukwu Dubem Nwigwe,” the artist and his mother either said “correct” or burst into laughter.
“how did my people do,” Nwigwe wrote
on Instagram.
While the challenge is lighthearted, it also highlights something deeply personal for Nwigwe. He has long embraced his Nigerian heritage in his music and public persona, and the video playfully underscores the importance of learning to correctly pronounce names that reflect people’s cultural identities.
Who is Tobe Nwigwe?
Nwigwe, an Alief-raised Nigerian American rapper and actor, first built a devoted following through his weekly #gettwistedsundays video series, which launched in 2016 and showcased original songs across social media.
After a foot injury ended his football career at the University of North Texas, Nwigwe has emerged as one of Houston’s most recognizable independent hip-hop artists, earning a Grammy nomination and acting roles in “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” and Netflix’s “Mo” while continuing to spotlight his family, faith and Houston roots in his work.
How many albums does Tobe Nwigwe have?
Nwigwe has released several full-length albums since his 2017 debut, “Tobe from the SWAT.”
He announced his upcoming album, “The Bridge,”
on June 29. The project is expected to feature artists including Busta Rhymes, Labrinth, Jay Electronica, Scarface and Paul Wall.
The album is set for release Aug. 21.
