The post Willie Nelson Announces 155th Album Willie Sings Merle, Unveils “Workin’ Man Blues”: Stream appeared first on Consequence.
Willie Nelson has announced a new album titled Workin’ Man: Willie Sings Merle. As the title suggests, the LP finds the 92-year-old Nelson paying tribute to his good friend Merle Haggard.
A press release notes that the album is Nelson’s 78th solo album, and whopping 155th overall. In advance of its November 7th release via Legacy Recordings, Nelson has unveiled the single “Workin’ Man Blues,” a cover of Haggard’s 1969 classic.

Nelson had a long history with Haggard prior to the latter’s passing in 2016. The two country legends released three collaborative albums together: 1983’s Pancho and Lefty; 2007’s Last of the Breed (alongside Ray Price); and 2015’s Django and Jimmie.
Workin’ Man: Willie Sings Merle features Nelson’s newly recorded renditions of 11 of his favorite Haggard tracks, among them “Swinging Doors,” “Okie From Muskogee,” “I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink,” and others.
The album features some of the final recordings of Nelson’s sister Bobbie Nelson on piano and Paul English on drums. The two longtime members of Nelson’s Family band passes away in 2022 and 2020, respectively.
Nelson co-produced the album with longtime collaborator Mickey Raphael, who also plays harmonica on the LP. The rest of the band is rounded out by Kevin Smith on bass and Paul English’s brother Billy English on drums and percussion.
The album announcement comes as Nelson is set to embark on the final leg of the “Outlaw Festival Tour” also featuring Bob Dylan, Sheryl Crow, and others. The new leg kicks off Friday (September 5th) in Bangor, Maine, and runs through a September 19th show in East Troy, Wisconsin. Pick up tickets here.
