The Bear actor Jeremy Allen White could star in a World War II survival thriller, potentially helmed by Severance director Ben Stiller. The project, an adaptation of The Lost Airman: A True Story of Escape from Nazi-Occupied France by Seth Meyerowitz, has also drawn the attention of A24.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, White and Stiller are in talks to board the project: the former as a cast member and the latter as director and producer. The outlet further reports that the title of the project will be Airman, and that A24 is also circling the adaptation to secure the package.
Notably, in August, the Los Angeles Times published an article that stated that Stiller was preparing for a World War II survival movie, likely referring to the project that became Airman.
Stiller is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished actor-filmmakers of recent years. Besides helming a considerable number of episodes of the Apple TV+ sci-fi psychological thriller series Severance, he has directed Reality Bites, Zoolander, Tropic Thunder, and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
White stars as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto on the FX on Hulu comedy-drama series The Bear. His performance has earned him two consecutive Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series in 2023 and 2024. This year, he has received the nomination for the third one.
Published in 2016, Meyerowitz’s book is about his grandfather, American Air Force turret-gunner Staff Sergeant Arthur Meyerowitz. During World War II, Staff Sergeant Meyerowitz’s B-24 was shot down over Nazi-occupied France. He subsequently evaded capture and formed a bond of friendship with the French resistance leader Marcel Talliander.
As per THR, Stiller will also likely produce the movie through the Red Hour Films banner. Jake Gyllenhaal will produce as well through his Nine Stories Productions.
If everything goes well, filming can reportedly begin in early 2027.
