Superman Sequel Title Clarified by James Gunn

James Gunn recently addressed questions about the title of his upcoming DC project, Man of Tomorrow. In a new Threads exchange, he clarified whether the film carries the Superman name in the title. He also confirmed how the feature connects to the larger Superman Saga.

James Gunn confirms Superman is not in Man of Tomorrow title

Responding to a fan on Threads who asked if the movie was called “Superman: Man of Tomorrow” or simply “Man of Tomorrow,” James Gunn clarified that it is “Just Man of Tomorrow.” The confirmation followed his earlier announcement that the film will continue the Superman Saga but not serve as a direct sequel to Superman.

The filmmaker previously told The Hollywood Reporter that he had already completed the treatment for the project, describing it as “the next story in what I’ll call the ‘Superman Saga.’” Gunn added he hoped to start production on the film soon.

On Instagram, he revealed the release date as July 9, 2027, alongside artwork by DC’s Jim Lee featuring Superman and Lex Luthor. The drawing depicted Luthor in his iconic green-and-purple armored suit, a staple of the comics that has not yet appeared in live-action.

Fans online questioned whether the absence of “Superman” in the title would affect its position as a sequel. One user commented that it “is a sequel because it is following on the events of Superman, it’s just not Superman 2.” Others speculated about a possible trilogy using Superman’s nicknames, with other suggestions such as Last Son of Krypton.

The news comes after the success of his new Superman movie, which grossed $611.6 million worldwide and introduced several other new DC Universe heroes, including Guy Gardner, Mister Terrific, and Hawkgirl. DC Studios has several projects slated before Man of Tomorrow, including Supergirl, directed by Craig Gillespie, slated to be released June 26, 2026, and James Watkins’ Clayface, slated to be released September 11, 2026.
