Julia Garner confirmed some exciting career news today.
On Wednesday, the actress confirmed in an interview with W Magazine that she is set to play Madonna in an upcoming biopic about the queen of pop.
“I can’t say too much about it, but yes, it’s a work in progress,” confirmed the 31-year-old actress.
In January 2023, it was reported that the biopic at Universal Pictures was scrapped. Madonna was set to direct the limited series about her life and career, and the script was going to be written by Diablo Cody and Erin Cressida Wilson. But a year and a half later, in July 2024, Madonna teased that she was working on the script again.
After Garner confirmed she was playing the “Hung Up” singer, a W Magazine producer asked what her favorite Madonna song was.
“I love ‘Borderline,’ that’s probably my favorite,” the Inventing Anna star said, referring to the hit song that came out in 1983. She also listed many of her other favorites, including “Papa Don’t Preach,” “Burning Up,” “Vogue” and “Ray of Light.” She also revealed she “basically grew up” listening to Madonna’s 2005 album Confessions on a Dance Floor.
Garner gained widespread acclaim for her role as Ruth Langmore in Netflix’s hit series Ozark from 2017 to 2022, earning three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Afterwards, she starred in Netflix’s Inventing Anna, which is based on Anna Delvey, a con-artist who stole the hearts and money of many New York elites.
Just this year, the American actress starred in many movies, including Weapons, Wolf Man and more recently, Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Though details about the biopic are limited, it’s known that Netflix will distribute it as a limited series, with Madonna herself playing a significant role in its production.
