The Kansas City Royals started Friday night just two games out of an American League wildcard spot at 71-69. Only the Texas Rangers stand between them and the Seattle Mariners.
The Royals started a three-game series at home against the Minnesota Twins, hoping to make up some more ground in the standings.
Regardless of the result of Friday night, the night resulted in a loss as the star shortstop left the game early due to an injury.
Before leaving the game, Witt was 0-for-3 with a strikeout. Coming into the game, the All-Star had played 138 games and was hitting .295 on the season. He had also clubbed 21 home runs, driven in 77 runs, and scored 90 runs.

Replacing him in the lineup was Nick Loftin for Kansas City.

The Royals will head out on the road for all of next week, as they play four at the Cleveland Guardians, before going to Philadelphia to battle the Phillies. The Royals and Mariners meet up September 16 – 18 for a massive three-game series.
