Mark Ruffalo is flexing his playfully cryptic might like a giant green muscle when it comes to his potential on-screen return as Hulk in the next Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland.
In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly pegged to Sunday’s premiere of his new HBO TV series Task, the three-time Oscar-nominated star teases that he may or may not be back on the big screen as Bruce Banner in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which began filming earlier this year.
“You know, that’s not confirmed!” the actor says, chuckling.

When EW asks if he can confirm it now, the star responds, “I can’t speak on that. I have no idea or right to do it at this moment in time.”
He adds that, “maybe down the line, if that does come to be, we can have that conversation in a deeper way” without fully confirming his return — or lack thereof.
EW has reached out to a representative for Sony for comment.
Several outlets reported last month that Ruffalo was circling a return in the upcoming fourth feature in Holland’s spider-verse. Ruffalo has remained mum across the board, recently telling Entertainment Tonight at the red carpet premiere of Task that he’s “still waiting to hear” about his involvement himself. “I haven’t read a script yet,” Ruffalo said. “If it does happen, it would be incredible.”
He was even more tight-lipped with The Hollywood Reporter, but expressed excitement over the possibility of working with Jon Bernthal, who will reprise his role as Frank Castle, a.k.a. the Punisher, in the film. “If I’m doing that, which the rumors are that I am, once I get a script, I’ll know it’s real — but I love him,” Ruffalo said. “I can’t wait to work with him. He plays that character like nobody else. I’m really excited to meet him; I’ve never met him!”
Destin Daniel Cretton, who helmed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, will direct the feature, which will see the return of Zendaya (as M.J. Jones-Watson) and Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds). They’ll also be joined by Stranger Things breakout Sadie Sink and Emmy-winning The Bear star Liza Colón-Zayas.

No plot details from the notoriously elusive Marvel yet, but longtime producer Amy Pascal divulged this tidbit in 2024: “We have to deal with the fact that he decided he was going to give up being Peter Parker, and that he was going to focus on being Spider-Man because being Peter Parker was too hard,” Pascal told Deadline. “So that’s what the movie is about.”
Cretton also promised an “emotional” story at CinemaCon this spring. “I’m spending my time exploring the next stage of this amazing character with a team of the most incredible artists in the world,” the filmmaker said. “We’re all, just daily, nerding out over the suit, how to swing, how to create an event, an emotional story, and a ride that we haven’t really seen before.”
