Tame Impala are back with a new song, “Loser.”
With a much funkier palette than prior single “End of Summer,” “Loser” is a slow-burning slice of psych pop from Kevin Parker. He likens himself to a sort of deadbeat throughout, claiming that he’s always messing up and that he’s learned his lesson. Reaching the chorus, Parker sings “I’m a loser, babe/ Do you wanna tear my heart out?” over a thumping trot.
The new song also arrives with a music video directed by Sam Kristofski and starring Joe Keery (A.K.A. Djo). The video depicts Keery down in the dumps (likely because of something he said to his love interest, who drives off annoyed at the start of the video) and hanging out at a Los Angeles convenience store called Bob’s Market. He grabs a beer, sits outside the market, and laments his fortune; for a brief frame, he’s replaced by Parker, who is fashioned in the same clothes and expression. Eventually, at the end of the video, Keery’s face lights up — but the video cuts to black. Watch the video below.
“Loser” follows July’s “End of Summer,” a house-inspired single that Parker initially debuted during a DJ set at Primavera Sound in Barcelona. Parker has yet to formally announce a new Tame Impala album to follow 2020’s The Slow Rush, but he’s remained busy over the last few years, collaborating with Justice, Thundercat, and Dua Lipa, winning his first-ever Grammy, and inventing his own instrument, The Orchid.
