Following the official announcement of Paramount Pictures’ upcoming live-action Call of Duty movie, it has been revealed that another major studio tried to acquire the adaptation rights to Activision’s popular video game series. Besides Paramount, Universal Pictures and Steven Spielberg‘s Amblin Entertainment also reportedly pitched their vision for the project, but were ultimately rejected by Activision.

Why isn’t Steven Spielberg directing the Call of Duty movie next?

According to Puck, the main reason why Activision decided to turn down Spielberg’s pitch to direct the live-action Call of Duty movie was due to a lack of creative control. Going with the “famous Spielberg deal” would mean that the acclaimed filmmaker will get “top-of-market economics, final cut, and full control over production and marketing.” This was reportedly a deal breaker for Activision. Because of this, the company decided to partner with Paramount Pictures instead, as their deal promised more control over the project’s creative process.

At the moment, Paramount’s Call of Duty movie has no director or cast attached to it yet. Back in 2015, Activision attempted to produce a Call of Duty cinematic universe by creating the production studio Activision Blizzard Studios. Tom Hardy and Chris Pine were the actors rumored to lead the project, with Sicario: Day of the Soldado’s Stefano Sollima and Black Panther’s Joe Robert Cole attached to direct and write, respectively. However, in 2020, Sollima confirmed that the project was put on hold.

Call of Duty is a first-person shooter military video game franchise that first launched in 2003. Since then, it has now become one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time, with over 500 million copies sold globally. Most of its storylines take place in a World War II setting, although there are also versions that are modern-day and futuristic games.
