After 12 years, the world will say goodbye to Ed and Lorraine Warren in The Conjuring: Last Rites. This will be the franchise’s final movie about the Warrens, a decision supported by director Michael Chaves.

Why does the Warrens’ story have to end in The Conjuring: Last Rites?

Last Rites has been billed as the final chapter for the Warrens. The Conjuring franchise will likely continue in a different form, but Last Rites ends the journey for Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, who have played Ed and Lorraine since 2013.

While speaking with GamesRadar+, Chaves said he felt “all the pressure” directing Last Rites, knowing that it marked the end of the Warrens’ story. Chaves also agreed that it’s time to say goodbye to these two iconic characters.

“I think you want to end on a high point,” Chaves explained. “I think it was something that everybody had the confidence to say, you know, we’re in a great space with this, with a series, and we don’t want this to be a series that just kind of gets [run] into the ground. We wanted to end with confidence and on our own terms.”

The Conjuring: Last Rites picks up in 1986. Ed and Lorraine Warren head to Pennsylvania to investigate a family being tormented by supernatural occurrences inside their home. The movie is based on the Smurl family haunting.

The Conjuring: Last Rites also stars Mia Tomlinson, Ben Hardy, Steve Coulter, Rebecca Calder, Elliot Cowan, Kíla Lord Cassidy, Beau Gadsdon, John Brotherton, and Shannon Kook.

Chaves directs from a screenplay by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. Chaves previously directed The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and The Nun II.

The Conjuring: Last Rites is the fourth Conjuring movie and the ninth entry in the Conjuring universe.

The Conjuring: Last Rites opens in theaters on September 5, 2025.
