Blackpink’s Jennie skipped tonight’s MTV VMAs in New York.
The singer had her first solo nomination in the Best K-Pop Song category.
Blackpink is currently on break from their Deadline World Tour, which will resume next month.
Blackpink’s Jennie returned to the Met Gala earlier this year, but tonight, the star isn’t back at the MTV VMAs. After the group made their debut there in 2022, Jennie chose to enjoy a night off during the girls’ well-deserved break.
Jennie has one nomination in the Best K-pop Song category for her solo track “Like Jennie.” Her bandmates, Jisoo, Lisa, and Rosé, are also nominated in that category. This marks Jennie and Jisoo’s first solo nominations.
The category was announced during the preshow, with Lisa taking the award. Lisa prerecorded her speech and skipped the ceremony as well.
The quartet will resume their Deadline World Tour in October; they finished their U.S. and European leg last month.
In April, Jennie spoke to Clash about making her solo album Ruby and how she took inspiration from Shakespeare’s the Seven Ages of Man monologue from As You Like It. “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players,” Jennie recalled. “I was inspired by that monologue because it represents these next steps to a whole new stage of my life. I’ve been wanting to do this musically for a long time. Even with all I’ve accomplished in my life, this album feels like a whole other level of discovery because I’m discovering everything on my own. It’s scary but thrilling also.”
Regarding her nominated song “Like Jennie,” the singer said, “It’s not as serious as it may seem. It’s me celebrating my style and my artistry whilst including the fans in the experience. It’s interactive. It’s one of the gifts of being a public-facing figure. I’m saying get your hair done and get your nails done like me, but in a fun way. It’s really a mirror for them to be who they are. It’s a self-love anthem.”
During the interview, she touched on her time as a member of Blackpink, saying, “When I started in Blackpink, I was so young and naive. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. Over time, I’ve come to realize the meaning and significance of having these girls in my life, whilst trying to figure out my own identity.”
She added later, “Me and the girls talk about how we’ve come so far together. When we first debuted as Blackpink, it took six years of my trainee life. It felt like a lifetime in the making. We are family. We care for each other. To be able to show that glory as BP, it’ll never not make me proud.”
