One of Milwaukee’s most prolific nonfiction television and movie producers and one of Wisconsin’s most Emmy-nominated talents both scored big at the Television Academy’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards this weekend in Los Angeles.
Given out Sept. 6-7, the Creative Arts Emmys cover most of the behind-the-camera Emmy awards, along with other specialty categories.
The Wisconsin winners included:
Vincent Kardasik (from left), Ryan Heller, Michael Bloom, Garrett McNamara, Zachary Rothfeld, Joe Lewis and Chris Smith celebrate winning an Emmy for outstanding documentary or nonfiction series for “100 Foot Wave” at the 2025 Creative Arts Emmy Awards in Los Angeles Sept. 7, 2025. Smith, a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee alum, also shared an Emmy for outstanding cinematography, also for “100 Foot Wave.”
Chris Smith — the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee film grad who put a spotlight on Milwaukee with the award-winning documentary “American Movie” — collected two Emmys Sept. 7: as part of the team winning for outstanding cinematography for a nonfiction program for “100 Foot Wave,” and as an executive producer for the winner for outstanding documentary or nonfiction series, also “100 Foot Wave.”
The pair of wins brought Smith’s Primetime Emmy total to three. He also won in 2024 for cinematography for a nonfiction program, again for “100 Foot Wave.”
Noah Mitz (from left), Erin Anderson, Hannah Kerman and Matt Benson show off their Emmys for outstanding lighting design / lighting direction for a special, won for “The 67th Annual Grammy Awards,” at the 2025 Creative Arts Emmy Awards in Los Angeles Sept. 7, 2025. Mitz, a Milwaukee native and Nicolet High School grad, has now won three Emmys.
Noah Mitz, a Milwaukee native who went to Nicolet High School, won his third Emmy Sept. 7 as part of the team for lighting design/lighting direction for a special for “The 67th Annual Grammy Awards.” Mitz also was nominated as part of the team for lighting design/lighting director for a series for “Dancing With the Stars.” (“Saturday Night Live” won the latter category.)
Mitz, who has 33 Emmy nominations overall, previously won Emmys in January 2024 for lighting design/lighting direction for a variety series, for “Dancing With the Stars,” and in 2022, for lighting design/lighting direction for a variety special, for “Adele: One Night Only.”
For those keeping score, “The Studio,” the Apple TV+ series spoofing Hollywood, leads the Emmys field so far with nine wins, followed by HBO’s “The Penguin” with eight. NBC’s “SNL50: The Anniversary Special” is the top broadcast winner so far, with seven Emmys.
The Primetime Emmys ceremony, during which the rest of the major honors are doled out by the Television Academy, airs live on Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. on CBS and Paramount+.
Carrie Coon, who cut her acting teeth at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and American Players Theatre in Spring Green, is among the nominees for supporting actress in a drama, for “The White Lotus.”
