Darkwave fans will be feasting soon. Synthpop duo Boy Harsher, Jae Matthews and Augustus Muller, are returning with a new album, their first album since 2019’s Careful and the original soundtrack they made for their horror film The Runner in 2022. Last month they teased the new project with mall anthem “Jeans.” Now, they’re back with the follow-up “Hard Beat” to announce new album Get Mean, their first since the end of Matthews and Muller’s romantic relationship.
The accompanying visual is something out of the horror movie Saw. Vocalist Jae Matthews sits in a dingy, decrepit room. We see her through the lens of an old video recorder. She sits in a wheelchair, hair hiding most of her face like The Ring‘s Samara, while one of her legs is in a strange metal brace. Static buzzes, a slender keyboard melody rattles off, and then we’re dropped into the stealth electronic beat as the camera shifts to a car cruising down a highway at night. Actors Cheeky Ma and Mo Stark sit in the front of the car, eyeing Matthews who is later dressed in a black veil.
Even though it’s unclear what’s happening, there’s a sleek sense of voyeurism and danger. Watch the video below.
