Kellogg Community College will host a piano recital featuring faculty and guest artists.

The event, titled “Favorites Old and New,” will take place at 3 p.m. Sept. 14 in the Davidson Visual and Performing Arts Center auditorium, 450 North Ave., Battle Creek. The recital is free and open to the public, according to a community announcement.

The program will showcase a variety of musical styles performed by faculty pianist Paula Harris and guest pianist Joan King. Pieces include “Sonata for Two Keyboards Four Hands” by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, “Ain’t Misbehavin’” by Fats Waller and “Cheek to Cheek” by Irving Berlin.

Other selections feature “Suite No. 1 Fantasie Tableaux” by Sergei Rachmaninoff, “The Garden of Eden Rags” by William Bolcolm and “Scaramouche” by Darius Milhaud. The recital also will include arrangements of “Amazing Grace,” “How Great Thou Art” and “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee.”

Harris holds an associate in arts degree from Kellogg Community College and a bachelor’s degree in worship arts with a focus on piano performance from Spring Arbor University. She has been a teacher and accompanist in the community for several years and taught at the Community Music School for more than 20 years. In 2017, Harris opened her own studio, Paula the Piano Lady, where she continues to teach. Harris served as the worship director for Chapel Hill United Methodist Church from 2000 to 2012, where she met King and formed the duo “Grands Grandioso.”

King holds a bachelor’s of music in education from Western Michigan University. She retired from the Community Music School in Battle Creek, where she taught private piano for 10 years. King was organist and accompanist for the chancel choir at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church for 27 years, retiring in August. She currently teaches private piano lessons from her home.
