Schwarzenegger Pratt, who’s a mother to daughters Eloise, 3, and Lyla, 5, and son Ford, 10 months, as well as a stepmother to Pratt’s son Jack, 13, from a previous relationship, says it’ll be “interesting” getting her children into the swing of things, but she plans to give the family and their routing some “grace.”
“I kind of go into it with an idea of what I would like to have happen, and then also giving myself and the kids and the whole routine grace,” she says. “Everyone’s just going to do their best, and there will be mornings where people are cranky and having a harder time transitioning out of summer, and then there will be mornings that it goes really smoothly and easily.”
She continues, “I feel just setting them up for success is the best way to go about it and that involves allowing them to have great sleep, allowing them to feel like they have a good routine set up that they can have some predictability with, and then incorporating things like a multivitamin from Hyland’s.”
The mom of four, who shares with PEOPLE that she’s an early riser, jokes that she believes she has to wake up earlier with every child she adds to the family.
“It feels like every child that I add to my life, I have to wake up earlier and earlier to feel like I can ease into my day in a calm, cool and collected way,” she says. “Right now, I’m at a 5:00 a.m. wake-up to make sure that I can get everything situated before my girls wake up and before the baby wakes up, so I feel like it’s just being prepared.”
Schwarzenegger Pratt tells PEOPLE that in the midst of the busy school schedules, she’s intentional about finding ways to connect as a family.
“We have meals together, which I think is really important and something I grew up with,” she explains. “Starting the day off, I always incorporate meditation into my morning, so I can start that off on a great note. And obviously, caffeine is a big part of it, and just doing things. I think, as a family, trying to stay connected in all of the chaos throughout the day.”
She adds, “Having check-ins with everybody is an important thing, even if it’s checking in with a meal or a book or a phone call, depending on where we are in our day.”
Above all, the doting mom shares that her big goal this year is “to stay in the moment” and cherish the “unique times” each of her children are in at the moment.
“My big goal this year was really to be present and to stay in the moment,” she says. “It’s been such a huge gift to be able to have my kids at the ages that they’re in and to be able to just be present in each of their unique times in their life.”

One of the biggest things that Schwarzenegger Pratt says is important to incorporate into her and her family’s back-to-school routine is a sense of calm.
“The biggest game changer has definitely been incorporating some routine of calm into my life. And for me, that’s been meditation,” she explains. “I think that’s been such a huge game changer for me and in how I am as a human being, and especially how I am as a mom.
This back-to-school time can be such a chaotic and crazy time… and I think anything that we can incorporate into our lives that allows us to have peace of mind and be present and also have the ripple effects of how we show up as parents, is such a huge part of everything,” she adds.
