Cillian Murphy is apparently happy to be able to sit out Christopher Nolan’s next film and enjoy it as a viewer rather than its main star.
In 2023, Cillian took the lead in Nolan’s epic Oppenheimer, having also worked with the British director on films like Dunkirk, Inception and The Dark Knight.
However, despite winning an Oscar for his leading role in Oppenheimer, the 28 Days Later actor is noticeably absent from the star-studded cast of Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of The Odyssey, which includes A-listers like Tom Holland, Zendaya, Charlize Theron and Matt Damon.
Fortunately, though, this doesn’t seem to be something Cillian is losing any sleep over.
When Variety asked earlier this week if he was developing any FOMO (fear of missing out) about not being in Nolan’s 2026 movie release, the typically-deadpan actor admitted: “I have ROMO: ‘Relief of missing out.’”
“I can’t wait to see it,” he then insisted. “If any director in the world could tackle The Odyssey it’s going to be Christopher Nolan. I’m so excited to see it.”
Cillian not appearing in The Odyssey clearly doesn’t mean there’s any bad blood between him and the Inception director, though.
The Peaky Blinders star enthused: “He’s one in a million, he’s been a huge part of my life as an actor, and I just can’t wait to see what he does with it.”
During a later appearance on §The Late Show, Cillian also made it clear to host Stephen Colbert that “ROMO” is not a bad thing, but rather a positive comment on enjoying the director as a film fan and not just as an actor.
“It’s a real gift to go and see Chris’ movies and watch them without having the terrible burden of looking at my own stupid head,” he quipped.
Since winning the Oscar in 2024, Cillian has noticeably been taking on roles in smaller independent films like Small Things Like This and Steve.
He will also soon reprise his role as Tommy Shelby in the upcoming Peaky Blinders film, and recently confirmed an appearance in Nia DaCosta’s 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, reprising his role from the very first film in the dystopian film series.
