A former royal butler has blamed Meghan Markle for “awakening” Prince Harry’s resentment for King Charles and Prince William – after her own major realisation about the reality of royal life.
Former palace staffer Grant Harrold served as a butler to King Charles from 2004 until 2011, and knew both Princes William and Harry as well as Princess Catherine.
Mr Harrold is the author of the new book The Royal Butler, to be released Sept. 23, which chronicles life in the palace as well as the moment Harry met Markle in July 2016.
“As soon as Meghan came into his life, everything changed,” Harrold told Page Six while promoting the book.
“It could be that Harry had his own awakening and suddenly decided he didn’t like the organisation, but the problem is that Meghan was with him when it happened.
“The biggest change in Harry’s life is Meghan.”
Harry married Meghan within two years of meeting the former Suits actress but the couple stayed in the monarchy for just 18 months before giving up their duties.
The former staffer claimed Markle quickly grew disillusioned with her new life as the Duchess of Sussex after discovering she was not actually a “Disney Princess”.
“I think the problem with Meghan is that she went into the organisation and she assumed that after watching all the Disney princesses that she thought it was going to be like that,” he said.
“When you join the royal family, you are given rules and protocols to follow.”
The comments echo similar claims by royal author Tom Bower, who has publicly claimed the Duchess of Sussex used Harry’s status to “woo Hollywood elites”.
The seemingly differing priorities between the royal family and Markle were on full display during their 2018 wedding, when Meghan opted to invite Hollywood celebrities she barely knew instead of relatives.
“All his friends were excluded (from the wedding) and all her Hollywood contacts were included, like Oprah Winfrey and George Clooney and all her agents,” Bower said.
“Everyone was there to help her career.”
The revelations come after Mr Harrold revealed that Harry’s ex Chelsy Davy had the seal of approval from Kate as a possible sister-in-law.
According to the butler, the so-called fab four would often enjoy quiet double dates at local pubs and got on “like a family”.
“There’s a local pub near Tetbury (and) we used to go in there, and you’d walk into the bar and you’d have William and Harry and Kate and Chelsy Davy, all sitting there,” he said.
“They were just fun. As I’ve said all the way along, they were just a family that all got on really nicely.”
