Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have reunited on screen once again, this time taking action due south from Boston all the way to Miami for a gritty cop drama.
More from Gold Derby
With The Rip on the horizon, Netflix has just released the first trailer, so here’s everything you need to know about the latest from Damon and Affleck.
Who’s in it?
After winning an Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay for Good Will Hunting, the real-life buddies Damon and Affleck have appeared in a handful of movies together, including Dogma, The Last Duel, and most recently Air in 2023.
The film also stars Oscar nominee/Emmy winner Steve Yeun, Emmy winner Kyle Chandler, and Teyana Taylor.
Who made it?
The Rip comes from director Joe Carnahan, who also wrote the screenplay from a story he and Michael McGrale conceived. Since the start of his career, Carnahan has specialized in gun-heavy fare like Narc and Smokin’ Aces. Most recently, he helmed the Kerry Washington–Omar Sy actioner Shadow Force.
What’s it about?
According to the official synopsis, The Rip follows a group of Miami cops who find and seize a massive amount of cash, hidden in a stash house. Things (of course) get messy once forces outside their team learn about the titular rip and trust begins to breakdown among the officers.
When does it come out?
The Rip is stream exclusively on Neflix beginning Jan. 16.
Does it have awards potential?
Despite the Oscar-winning talent at the center of it, The Rip’s January release date is a pretty clear indication of the streamer’s awards aspirations for the film. But fresh off an Emmys win for Best TV Movie with Rebel Ridge, Netflix could have a contender come next September.
