New ‘Conjuring’ movie remembers late paranormal investigator found dead after touring with ‘possessed’ Annabelle doll

It’s a strange twist when art imitates life, because no one expected what usually happens in a horror movie to take place in the real world.

The latest installment of “The Conjuring” movie franchise, “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” paid tribute to Dan Rivera, the paranormal investigator who died after an event that featured the real Annabelle doll, which is featured in the films.

As previously reported, Rivera — who worked with the New England Society of Psychic Research (NESPR) for over a decade as a senior lead investigator — died on July 13 while on the “Devils On the Run” tour in Gettysburg, where the doll was on display.

The 54-year-old was discovered at a hotel where the tour was being held.

“The decedent was discovered in his hotel room by workers,” the police said, per Us Weekly. “Nothing unusual or suspicious was observed at the scene.”

According to Francis Dutrow, Adams County coroner, Rivera’s autopsy is complete.

Earlier this week, his cause of death was revealed to be cardiac-related and was ruled as natural.

“Mr. Rivera had a known history of cardiac issues, which were consistent with the findings. It is also confirmed that Annabelle was not present in the room at the time of his passing,” the coroner said.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Michael Chaves, the director of “The Conjuring: The Last Rites,” which opened in theaters on Friday, called Rivera’s death “tragic” and a “curveball.”

“The poor guy,” Chaves said. “We wanted to just handle it as respectfully as possible.”

He also added that everyone involved in the film discussed how the tribute should be handled. They ultimately decided on including a dedication to Rivera in the film’s ending credits.

After his death, Rivera was also remembered by the NESPR.

“Dan’s passion for the paranormal was rooted in a genuine desire to educate, help, and connect with others — whether through social media, conventions, or investigations with local families seeking understanding and peace,” the organization said in a previous statement. “We understand that Dan’s work inspired fascination and curiosity for many, but above all, he was a father, devoted husband, and loyal friend, someone who meant the world to those closest to him.”
