In a surprise move following his four-day UK visit, Prince Harry jetted off to Ukraine to express solidarity with the country’s injured. The Duke of Sussex, 40, was anticipated to board a flight to Los Angeles on Thursday night after spending a few days across the Atlantic.
However, he instead embarked on an overnight train journey to Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, expressing his desire to do “everything possible” to assist, following an invitation from a charity leader.
Accompanied by a team from the Invictus Games Foundation, the Prince, a fervent advocate for wounded veterans, is expected to unveil new initiatives to bolster rehabilitation efforts. He shared with The Guardian that the foundation aims to eventually extend aid to all regions of the war-ravaged nation, where an estimated 130,000 individuals have been left with permanent disabilities. While aboard the train, he stated: “We cannot stop the war but what we can do is do everything we can to help the recovery process.”
He further added: “We can continue to humanize the people involved in this war and what they are going through. We have to keep it in the forefront of people’s minds.”
“I hope this trip will help to bring it home to people because it’s easy to become desensitised to what has been going on,” said the Prince, who was invited to the country by Olga Rudnieva, the founder and CEO of the Superhumans Trauma Centre in Lviv. The Royal had previously visited the center, which provides care for war-wounded veterans, specifically amputees, during a surprise visit in April.
While he acknowledged that he couldn’t stop the war, Ms. Rudnieva told him that his biggest impact would be visiting the nation’s capital.
However, before he could make the trip, he needed to consult with Meghan Markle, his wife, and the British government – then he received an official invitation. He recalled: “I bumped into Olga in New York. It was a chance meeting and I asked her what I could do to help. She said ‘the biggest impact you have is coming to Kyiv’.
“I had to check with my wife and the British government to make sure it was OK. Then the official invitation came. In Lviv, you don’t see much of the war. It is so far west. This is the first time we will see the real destruction of the war.”
The Prince is gearing up for another busy trip, his second in a week following his whirlwind charity-focused visit to the UK. His itinerary includes official appearances such as a visit to the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War, spending time with 200 invited veterans, and a meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko.
