Dozens, perhaps hundreds, of songbirds met their doom when a brief high wind pushed them out over and into Lake Superior. The state DNR responded to calls from anglers and collected about 50 of the dead birds east of Grand Marais, but has heard other reports and may never know how many birds were affected.
