Sixth time proved the charm for Noah Wyle, who on Sunday took home his first Emmy for his acclaimed performance on The Pitt.
Wyle, a five-time Emmy nominee for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his turn as Dr. John Carter on NBC’s ER, earned his first nomination in 26 years — and his first as Lead Actor — for portraying Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch on the HBO Max medical drama.

His competition included Sterling K. Brown (Paradise), Gary Oldman (Slow Horses), Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us) and Adam Scott (Severance), though most awards pundits saw it as essentially a two-man race between Wyle and Scott.

The Pitt premiered in January. The series’ official logline describes it as a “realistic examination of the challenges facing healthcare workers in today’s America, as seen through the lens of the frontline heroes working in a modern-day hospital in Pittsburgh.” The show takes place in real time (à la 24), with each episode covering a single hour in an emergency department shift.
Its freshman run racked up 13 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Supporting Actress (for Katherine LaNasa, who also won Sunday) and Outstanding Guest Actor (for Shawn Hatosy, who took home gold at the Creative Arts ceremony). TVLine previously hailed it TV’s Best Current Medical Drama, and named Wyle our Performer of the Week following Robby’s breakdown in Episode 13.
