As the Duke of Sussex endeavors to mend fences with his relatives in hopes of making more frequent trips to the UK, his spouse Meghan is reportedly preparing herself, feeling “threatened” by the possibility of re-entering Royal life.

Just last week, Harry, 41, completed a triumphant four-day solo journey to his native country, reconnecting with his father, King Charles, for the first time in 19 months.

When questioned about his father’s wellbeing shortly after his arrival at an Invictus Games reception, Harry – whose landmark meeting at Clarence House spanned merely 54 minutes – responded, “Yes, he’s great, thank you.”

He appeared unable to contain his joy as he bantered with attendees at the central London gathering – a striking departure from the more serious demeanor witnessed during earlier UK appearances.

Harry’s journey and, significantly, his encouraging encounter with King Charles, ignited optimism that a reunion with the remainder of his alienated relatives might be on the horizon.

However, following former BBC Royal correspondent Jennie Bond’s observation that Meghan, 44, “would feel somewhat threatened by her husband being drawn back into the royal circle,” a prominent psychologist has cautioned that the mother-of-two’s previous trauma could be reactivated by such a development.

Meghan has candidly discussed her difficult experiences in the UK.

During her explosive sit-down with Oprah Winfrey, she disclosed feeling isolated upon joining the Royal family and “didn’t want to be alive any more”, yet was denied professional assistance. During the court proceedings concerning the publication of Meghan’s handwritten letter to her father, Thomas Markle, legal documents submitted by Meghan’s legal team disclosed she also felt “unprotected by the institution” and “prohibited from defending herself” while expecting Prince Archie, now six.

Psychologist Clare Deacon explains that Meghan’s distressing experiences won’t simply “just disappear” despite her move across the Atlantic.

“It isn’t erased by distance, and even years later, stepping back into a space that once felt emotionally unsafe can activate past fears, doubts, and protective behaviours,” she explains.

“If reconciliation [with the royal family] led to a return or increased UK presence, Meghan could understandably feel conflicted – torn between duty, identity and the peace she’s built since.”

The expert added that Meghan might worry about “of losing herself again” if she temporarily returns to her former life after “finding her voice and reclaiming her wellbeing”.

Just last week, an associate of the prince disclosed he hasn’t given up his battle to bring his family back to Britain, revealing to The Times, “He wants them to know their family here. He really would like to come back to the UK much more.”

The report also claimed that Harry is planning an “under-the-radar” approach to the security issue, and “the government should expect private ‘lobbying’ from the prince” to continue. However, involving Archie and Lilibet, four, in the situation is likely to create even greater distress for Meghan.

Psychologist Clare, founder of therapy and coaching platform Happya, suggests Meghan’s maternal instincts will drive her to protect Archie and Lilibet from any trauma she has endured personally, making a trip to Britain extremely challenging even for a brief stay.

Should a UK visit become unavoidable, Clare explains, Meghan must “explore what feels unsafe, separating past experience from present reality”, while establishing clear boundaries for herself and her children.

Harry, 41, has expressed that he “would love” a reconciliation with his family. However, following his failed High Court appeal regarding his security arrangements in the UK, he declared he “can’t see a world in which I would bring my wife and children back to the UK”.

In July, speculation about a potential reconciliation intensified after a gathering between senior advisors from the King’s office and representatives from Harry and Meghan’s communications team.

Meredith Maines from the Sussexes’ California-based PR team and her UK colleague, Liam Maguire, were photographed on the balcony of a private members’ club in London alongside Tobyn Andreae, the King’s communication secretary, conducting what were characterized as “secret peace talks”. Meghan Markle, last month, expressed her fondness for the freedom she experiences living in Montecito, California, describing parts of her life as a working Royal in the UK as “inauthentic”.

The possibility of the Sussexes reconciling with the Royal family may hinge not only on Prince Harry‘s yearning for his homeland, but also on Meghan’s resolve to maintain the freedom she strived so diligently to regain.
