Bill Mumy picked the perfect song to play in honor of the 60th anniversary of Lost in Space. The former child star, who played Will Robinson on the 1960s sci-fi series, took to Instagram on Sept. 15 to play a cover of the Byrds classic “Mr. Spaceman.”
“MONDAY MORNING MUMY MUSIC MOMENT,” he captioned the clip. “’MR. SPACEMAN’ Written by McGuinn and a hit for The Byrds back when Lost in Space was originally airing.”
Mumy, 71, added, “I played this song on TV shows, radio shows and around the country on promotional gigs when I was a kid.”
The actor noted that he later joined a Byrds tribute band.
Mumy previously told Goldmine magazine that his TV sister got him into the Byrds. “It was 1965, I was filming Lost in Space and Marta Kristen, who played my sister, Judy Robinson, turned me on to both The Byrds and Dylan,” he said. “I had a stereo record player in my dressing room, and the other cast members would bring their records in and hang out in my trailer, listening to music when they weren’t needed on set.”
“The Byrds were ‘my band’ as a teenager,” he added.
The timing of Mumy’s spaceman-themed “music moment” was perfect. Sept. 15 marked the 60th anniversary of the debut of Lost in Space.
Fans reacted in the comment section, with some wishing Mumy a happy anniversary in honor of the show that made him famous.
Others noted that they remembered Mumy performing “Mr. Spaceman” in the past.
“I recall you doing this on Mike Douglas, I think. One of those daytime talk shows,” one fan wrote.
From Sept. 15, 1965, to March 6, 1968, Mumy played Will Robinson on Lost inSpace. His character was part of a pioneering family of space colonists played by Guy Williams, June Lockhart, Marta Kristen, and Angela Cartwright.
Mumy went on to become a frequent fixture on classic TV, with guest roles on The Munsters, The Rockford Files, I Dream of Jeannie, and more.
As a child star, he also made the rounds as an aspiring musician. On Instagram, he shared a photo from his first-ever solo gig at the Hollywood Bowl. “Been somewhat downhill ever since,” he joked.
Mumy has worked with everyone from Brian Wilson to Shaun Cassidy and was a member of the duo Barnes & Barnes of “Fish Heads” fame. He has also released several solo albums.
While he segued his career into music, Mumy has said that he lived out his dreams as a child actor on Lost in Space.
“Every child has a gift, and mine from an early age was being able to easily memorize a script and deliver the dialogue believably,” he told Tinseltown Talks in an interview. “I loved being little superhero Will Robinson. As a child actor, he was everything I ever wanted to be.”
