Once hailed as the “new Grace Kelly,” Irish actress Constance Smith seemed destined for Hollywood stardom, but her life took a tragic turn towards addiction, violence, and poverty, leading to her destitute death in 2003. Born into extreme poverty in Limerick in 1928, Smith’s fortunes changed dramatically in the 1950s when she was discovered and signed by Fox Studios, touted as a promising newcomer who could rival the era’s biggest stars.

She even had the honor of presenting an award at the 1952 Oscars, a privilege typically reserved for up-and-coming talents.

For a while, studio boss Darryl F. Zanuck courted her, viewing her as his muse, and she starred alongside big names like Jack Palance.

The actor affectionately dubbed her the “Dublin Dietrich,” while others compared her to “an intelligent man’s Elizabeth Taylor.”

Some critics even suggested she could be the next Maureen O’Hara or Grace Kelly. However, her personal life was as tumultuous as the roles she portrayed, reports the Express.

Smith married thrice, including to the son of an Italian Fascist senator who derogatorily referred to her as a “shoeless Irish peasant.”

Later, she tied the knot with renowned British filmmaker Bryan Forbes, known for his work on Whistle Down the Wind.

Reflecting on her downfall, Forbes penned, “When the blow fell… the Hollywood system allowed of no mercy. She was reduced to the status of a Hindu road sweeper.”

Smith’s stormy relationship with documentary-maker Paul Rotha was a tabloid sensation in the 1960s when she was imprisoned for stabbing him during a drunken dispute. Despite this, Rotha forgave her and they continued their on-again, off-again relationship for many years.

As time passed, Smith’s star began to dim. Hollywood turned its back on her, with studios forcing her into an abortion and attempting to rebrand her before ultimately discarding her.

Struggling with substance abuse and without any acting roles, she found herself working as a cleaner in London.

Former coworkers said they recognized her face but couldn’t identify her as the woman once predicted to take Hollywood by storm.

Despite her fall from grace, she left behind memorable performances in films like Man in the Attic (1951) and Impulse (1957), where her smoky, noir-like qualities were showcased.

However, the 1950s Hollywood scene was flooded with brunette bombshells like Jane Russell, Ava Gardner, and Gene Tierney – and Smith never got the opportunity to truly stand out.

As the years rolled on and Smith failed to land the roles she believed she deserved, she spiraled into a life of drugs and alcohol.

Constance’s last acting gigs were in a series of minor Italian films between 1955 and 1959, including a role as Lucretia Borgia in La congiura dei Borgia (1959).

None of these roles managed to revive her dwindling career. During her time in Rome, she made her first suicide attempt by overdosing on barbiturates.

Her final film appearance was in 1959. Film scholar Ruth Barton subsequently commented, “It seems regrettable that Constance Smith should have been so completely forgotten given that she was once, if briefly, a Hollywood star.”

Constance passed away from natural causes in London in 2003 at the age of 74.
