Sheeran’s message honoring Irwin and his family comes a few months after he participated in an epic impromptu show. Teaming up with Noah Kahan, the “Perfect” singer shut down the beloved dive bar for an intimate night of music. The duo took turns on acoustic guitars in the middle of the bar, with Sheeran even debuting an unreleased song titled “Old Phone.” Later, the crowd joined in when Kahan launched into his hit “Dial Drunk.”
That evening, filled with laughter, surprise music, and a packed house of devoted regulars, now stands as a fitting tribute to the man known as Santa — the larger-than-life figure who made the Christmas-themed dive one of Nashville’s most iconic gathering spots since it’s opening in 2011.
Santa, whose real name was Elmer Denzel Irwin, the owner of the Christmas-themed karaoke bar’s death was confirmed after a family friend shared the news on Instagram on Sunday, September 14. “Santa has flown home to the North Pole. my how great it was to share life with him,” they wrote. “My heart breaks but my gratitude is full for having the chance to know and love him and to be loved by him.”
Country star Kacey Musgraves also remembered Santa, calling him “a massive part” of her friends lives and adding, the he “made it Christmas year round.” She shared a series of emotional Instagram stories recounting memories with the “local legend.”
