Donald Trump may need to consult King Charles‘ family tree after failing to recognize Prince Harry as one of the monarch’s sons.
“I just want to say that King Charles has raised a remarkable son and his Royal Highness Prince of Wales [is] really amazing,” the president said during a speech at Windsor Castle. “We’ve gotten to know you and I think you’re going to have an unbelievable success and future.”
Referring to Prince William as Charles’ singular son may be seen as a jab to Harry, who is publicly estranged from the family.
In the video of the speech shared by UK newspaper, The Independent, Trump also complimented William’s wife Kate Middleton, noting that she looked “so radiant and so healthy and so beautiful.”
Trump gave the speech at a banquet concluding the first day of his — along with First Lady Melania Trump’s — official state visit to the UK. The banquet, which had around 160 people in attendance, The Independent reported, took place at St. George’s Hall in Windsor Castle.
The remarks coincidentally come a week after Harry visited his father in the UK. The visit was hailed as “a massive step” towards the two repairing their relationship.
President Donald Trump and Melania Trump’s Royal Visit So Far
The president and First Lady arrived in the UK on Wednesday. They were greeted by the Prince and Princess of Wales upon arrival — where it was speculated that Trump broke royal protocol immediately by telling Princess Kate that she is “so beautiful.” (Which he repeated at the banquet.)
The Trumps then joined King Charles and Queen Camilla for a carriage ride. During their visit to Windsor, the First Lady’s outfit sparked buzz on social media for its alleged similarities to fictional characters. They also visited Queen Elizabeth‘s burial site.
For the banquet dinner she donned a bright yellow, off the shoulder gown that was complete with a purple belt.
