Demi Lovato briefly spoke about Selena Gomez during an interview this week, sending a sweet message to her childhood friend ahead of Gomez’s wedding.
Lovato and Gomez both appeared on Barney and later the Disney Channel together, although they grew apart as they got older.
Lovato has joined a new Disney project that was just announced today: Camp Rock 3, which she’ll be executive producing.
Hours before Camp Rock 3 was announced, Demi Lovato reflected on another major figure from her Disney days: Selena Gomez, her close friend at the time and co-star in multiple Disney Channel projects, including Princess Protection Program. The two stars even made vlogs together.
Lovato appeared on Watch What Happens Live yesterday and was asked about I Said I Love You First, Gomez’s album with her fiancé Benny Blanco, which came out earlier this year.
“I have listened to the album—really, really great job,” Lovato said. “I loved the songs on it. ‘Bluest Flame’ was my song.” She then touched on Gomez’s upcoming wedding, which is reportedly at the end of this month: “I couldn’t be happier for her—she’s engaged. I just wish her the best.” Lovato got married herself to Jutes this May.
Lovato and Gomez haven’t made any public appearances together in recent years, but they went viral for their reunion at the 2017 InStyle Awards. Days earlier, they exchanged “love you” messages on Instagram.

In 2020, Gomez shared an Instagram Story praising Lovato for her Grammys performance. “I wish there were words to describe how beautiful, inspirational, and DESERVED this moment was,” she wrote. “Demi, I’m so happy for you. Thank you for your courage and bravery.”
That April, Lovato told Harper’s Bazaar that while the two weren’t close at that time, she would always wish Gomez well. “When you grow up with somebody, you’re always going to have love for them,” she said, later adding, “I will always have love for her, and I wish everybody nothing but the best.”
Lovato and Gomez have come a long way in the last five years. Lovato, in particular, is thriving. She recently spoke to Paper about her decision to make dance-pop music on her upcoming album, It’s Not That Deep, saying it stems from her being in a “lighter” place.
“I think it’s really a reflection of where I’m at personally,” she said. “I’m not in this place in my life where I need these huge emotional ballads to release some sort of deep emotional trauma I’m going through. I realized that when I started making this project. I started writing songs like that, and they just weren’t resonating…heavy topics like that. I’m in a place in my life where my energy feels very light. I just got married. It was a learning curve for me to take what I’ve always known about music, which is write what you know now. I had to learn how to write what was new to me, and that’s what this album is a reflection of. The tone of my life is lighter. I wanted a project that reflected that.”
