Dexter is a franchise that, even after many years since its debut, still remains a major crowd puller with plenty of stories left to explore. However, following the high-profile merger between Paramount and Skydance, the progress of exploration of the Dexter universe has come to a halt. Creator and showrunner Clyde Phillips, like the fans, is unhappy with the situation.
The news of axing the second season of Original Sin came just four months after its official renewal by Paramount. On the Dissecting Dextor podcast, Phillips explained, “It was a tough phone call I got that night where they had already picked up the show. I had informed all the writers and actors… It wasn’t handled well and I’m not happy about it.”
The studio had big plans for Dexter, turning the serial killer’s universe into a Yellowstone-style franchise. Sadly, this ambition is now in question in the post-merger environment. Though Matt Thunell, who is overseeing Paramount’s TV division, is open to exploring projects that involve Michael C. Hall’s take on the anti-hero, which explains Resurrection’s renewal.
The repercussion of this changed strategy means several previously announced projects, such as the Trinity-Killer spin-off, which had already seen ten episodes scripted by the writers, are likely to be halted. Additionally, there were whispers that a spin-off involving a character from Dexter: Resurrection may never come to fruition. This, no doubt, is shaping up to be bad news not just for the franchise but also for loyal Dexter fans.
Dexter: Resurrection was renewed for Season 2 and will begin filming next year.
