Demi Lovato admits she feels safer and more authentic in queer spaces
In her latest interview with Paper Magazine, Demi Lovato opened up about feeling real in queer spaces. The 33-year-old shared that her connection with queer club culture is simple: “I love going out with my friends.” She further added that she “loves dancing and doing that in queer spaces because it feels safe to me.” The singer revealed that she “just doesn’t feel as safe” in “a straight club.”
“I feel like when I go to a queer space, I know that I’m among friends. I know I’ll have a great time,” she continued. The “Let It Go” singer also explained why she always felt safer in queer spaces. This is “because queer people have a way of living so authentically, that it makes me feel like I can live authentically.” Lovato stated that “having people around me that make me feel safe to be myself is something I always longed for as a kid in Texas.” She explained, “As a queer kid in Texas, I had a lot of religious shame around coming out.”
This is “because growing up in the Bible belt … or maybe Texas isn’t in the Bible belt, but you know what I mean.” “So now I get to go out, and I get to live authentically and be myself,” she added. Lovato called this an “amazing” feeling. She is “celebrating with” her “music” and also played “Kiss” at a queer party. The award-winning singer concluded: “I wanted to share it with my fans first. It went really great. I’m so happy with how everyone loved it.”
Lovato came out as pansexual and sexually fluid in March 2021. In her interview with Glamour, the musician revealed feeling queer as she aged. She stated, “When I started getting older, I started realizing how queer I really am.” “I know who I am and what I am, but I’m just waiting until a specific timeline to come out to the world as what I am,” she continued.
