NEED TO KNOW

  • A routine Uber ride sparked an unexpected connection between a young woman and a 92-year-old man

  • What began as a simple act of kindness soon turned into a meaningful tradition

  • Though once strangers, they now feel like “family”

Dianna Morales never expected that a routine Uber pickup would lead to a lasting connection.

Working as a part-time Uber driver for nearly three years to help cover expenses, the mother of two from Victorville, Calif., had driven dozens of passengers to their various destinations.

But one quiet afternoon in November 2024, the 27-year-old accepted a ride request that would stand out from the rest. Her passenger, 92-year-old Leroy Burdick, was headed to his neighborhood church.

“When he told me his age, I was shook because usually a lot of my elderly passengers can’t really keep a conversation going because they can’t hear me,” Morales tells PEOPLE exclusively. “But he was just so attentive and responsive with everything I would ask him — it shocked me.”

As they chatted in the car, Burdick shared that he could no longer drive due to his age and that his daughter often ordered his Uber rides for him.

Ever since his wife died 20 years ago, Burdick has spent the majority of his time singing in his church choir, playing the piano and golfing on Tuesdays.

Touched by his story and gentle nature, Morales shared her number and offered to drive Burdick to church whenever he needed a ride.

“She seemed like a family person and spoke beautifully of her children, and we both live in Victorville, so I thought it would be a wonderful way for myself to save a couple bucks and pay her directly instead,” Burdick tells PEOPLE.

What began as a simple act of kindness soon turned into a recurring routine. “He attends church [on] Saturdays now, so I’m unable to take him,” she reveals. “But I do take him to run errands at least once a week.”

With each trip, their conversations grew deeper, filled with shared stories, laughter and unexpected wisdom.

Morales reveals that she has stopped accepting Burdick’s payments, even though he insists.

“I try to not charge him anymore, but he always gives me whatever he can,” she shares. “He would usually pay me $40, but I stopped accepting it because I didn’t see it as a ‘job’ anymore — I saw him more as family.”

Now, nearly a year later, Burdick has not only met Morales’ husband and two sons, but has also had the opportunity to spend meaningful, quality time with them.

On Sundays, Morales and her family pick Burdick up from home and go golfing together at least twice a month despite their busy schedules.

Burdick has come to genuinely enjoy the time spent with Morales and her family, emphasizing that “nice people still exist.”

As a token of his appreciation, Burdick even went as far as getting Morales’ 8-year-old a personal golf trainer and his very first set of golf clubs.

“I’ve learned that God puts people in your life for a reason, and his reason was to show me that I’m capable of caring for someone that is not my blood or family,” Morales says.

“My kids love him and so does my husband. We have grown a beautiful bond and seeing him enjoy his Sunday by our side makes it even more beautiful.”
