A 77-year-old man has died after a five-alarm fire broke out in Montreal’s Plateau-Mont-Royal borough at around 4:50 a.m. Sunday.
The fire ravaged a three-storey residential and commercial building located at the intersection of Mont-Royal Avenue East and Saint-André Street.
It started on the third floor and spread to the roof.
A man was taken to hospital and was in critical condition Sunday morning. Montreal police confirmed his death in the afternoon.
Around 150 firefighters were trying to control the flames on Sunday. Montreal police and paramedics were also at the scene.
Power was cut off in the area as a safety precaution. By 8:30 a.m., the fire had been extinguished.
Montreal police are now investigating the cause of the fire, which was still unknown Sunday afternoon.
