At the box office, the best possible outcome is for every movie to make a movie. That way, everyone wins! Alas, sometimes the box office race is a sport with winners and losers. First, the big winner continues to be Demon Slayer: Infinity Train. Despite falling 75% from its eye-popping debut last week, the film still brought in an estimated $17.3 for a #1 finish. Worldwide, the anime adventure has brought in $555 million.

In second place, we find newcomer Him, the football-themed psychological horror flick from producer Jordan Peele and star Marlon Wayans. With buzzy marketing that turned heads with its striking visuals, I was expecting a little more than $13.5 million, but it’s not a bad opening for a movie with a budget under $30 million. Perhaps it needed a little more distance from The Conjuring: Last Rites, which brought in $12.9 million in its third weekend, bringing its total past the $150 million milestone.

While The Conjuring might have siphoned some of the horror audience away from Him, it’s safe to say that it didn’t lose any of the football-lovers to Angel Studios’ The Senior. The “based on a true story” football drama starring Michael Chiklis failed to impress with just $2.7 million in its opening frame, a seventh place finish. The budget was likely miniscule on this one, but it might be time for Chiklis to pursue a revival of The Shield or see if his version of The Thing can crossover with the newly rebooted Fantastic Four.

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey opened to sixth place, ahead of The Senior, but nobody’s celebrating. The $45 million production grossed just $3.5 million, even with the combined star power of Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie. This will go down as one of the biggest bombs of the year. Was it too schmaltzy? Too high-concept? Or did audiences suspect that this was one of those awards season wannabes that couldn’t really compete and was thus pushed out the door in September to die on the vine? In any case, it’s a total bummer.

As for holdovers, the big success here is The Long Walk, which fell just 46%, grossing $6.3 million and landing in fourth place in its second weekend. The oppressively bleak film starring Cooper Hoffman and Mark Hamill currently sits at $22 million after ten days. Tied with The Long Walk is the second weekend of Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, which fell 65% from its opening. This is a bit steeper than I was expecting, considering the pedigree of the franchise and its older demographic.

Overall, this was a quiet weekend at the box office. Next week, we’ll see if The Strangers reboot project can justify its existence as a trilogy of films, and we’ll also have the answer to the age-old question: What the heck is Gabby’s Dollhouse? Yeah, it’ll probably be a quiet one next week, too, but the limited release of Eleanor the Great and One Battle After Another will be the real story.
