Indigenous tenor, composer and pianist Jeremy Dutcher will perform as part of the free events offered at the 2025 The Path Forward community celebration at the Orpheum on Sunday.

Dutcher, a Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) member of the Tobique First Nation in northwest New Brunswick, is a Juno and Polaris prizewinner who has released acclaimed recordings on the Secret City label, 2018s Wolasotqiyik Lintuwakonawa and 2023s Motelwolonuwok. The Path Forward free community celebration is produced by the VSO Indigenous Council, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) and VSO School of Music and presented by TD Ready Commitment.

“The Path Forward is a powerful example of how the arts can bring people together in meaningful ways,” says Doris Bear, Vice-President of Indigenous Banking, TD Bank Group. “Through the TD Ready Commitment, we’re proud to support opportunities that invite reflection and connection while amplifying the voices of Indigenous Peoples through storytelling, music, and cultural expression.”

The annual event leading up to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a combined result of conversations between the VSO Indigenous Council members and their communities in the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) First Nations. The performance on Sept. 28 starts at 4 p.m. at the Orpheum Theatre and includes free activities for all ages.

Starting at 6 p.m., a concert hosted by Darnell Stager will present the VSO performing Carnival of OUR Animals, a Coast Salish reimagining of Camille Saint-Saens’ Carnival of the Animals. This piece features compositions inspired by the Thunderbird (Musqueam Nation), Eagle (Tsleil-Waututh) and Salish Wooly-Dog (Squamish). Additional material gifted to the VSO to perform include Chief Dan George’s Coast Salish Anthem, the Musqueam Paddle Song, and the Squamish Nation Anthem and a special guest performance by Squamish Nation’s Proud Little Warriors.

The second half of the concert following intermission includes a fashion show from fashion designer Pam Baker, featuring Supernaturals models and music by DJ O Show. Jeremy Dutcher and his trio will finish out the event.

The VSO convened an Indigenous Council as a commitment to Truth and Reconciliation in 2018 and The Path Forward is one of the results of its actions. For more information, please visit vancouversymphony.ca/pathforward.
