Angelina Jolie voiced her concerns about the U.S. and freedom of speech while promoting her latest film overseas.

The Oscar-winning American actress, who was attending the annual San Sebastián Film Festival in Spain on Sept. 21 to promote her movie, “Couture,” expressed love for her country, but added, “at this time, I don’t recognize it.”

“I’ve always lived internationally. My family is international,” Jolie said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “My friends, my life, my worldview, is equal, united, international. Anything, anywhere that divides or, of course, limits personal expressions and freedoms, from anyone, I think, is very dangerous.”

Jolie continued: “I think these are such serious times that we have to be careful not to say things casually. These are very, very heavy times we’re all living in together.”

Jolie’s comments came as ABC “indefinitely” suspended “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Sept. 17 after comments from host Kimmel about the arrest in the shooting death of conservative podcaster Charlie Kirk. However, Kimmel is expected to return on Tuesday, Sept. 23 − sooner than expected, USA TODAY has reported.

Kimmel, in a monologue, had said “the MAGA gang” was “desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.” Kirk, cofounder of the conservative organization Turning Point USA, was shot and killed during an event at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10. A suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, has been charged with his murder.

Disney-owned ABC’s decision came after the head of the Federal Communications Commission appointed by President Donald Trump expressed ire at the host’s comments and broadcaster Nexstar announced intentions not to air the show.

Earlier this year, CBS announced it was canceling “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” after the 2025-2026 TV season, ostensibly because of finances, with Trump and conservatives celebrating. Immediately after ABC decided to preempt Kimmel, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform in delight, further calling on NBC to cancel the remaining two broadcast late-night hosts: Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers.

Comedian Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night talk show, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, will resume production after it was pulled off the air Sept. 17, following comments he made in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s killing. Kimmel, a frequent critic of Donald Trump, often earned the ire of the president.

After the announcement, Trump urged other networks to do the same. Scroll to see the other late-night talk show hosts that have feuded with the president over the years.

Jolie attends San Sebastian Film Festival to present her film ‘Couture’

Jolie attended the 73rd annual San Sebastian Film Festival for the first time ever to present her film “Couture,” directed by French filmmaker Alice Winocour. The film was included in the Official Competition Selection, according to a news release by the festival.

“Couture,” set during Paris Fashion Week, is about three women whose lives intersect in Paris. Among them is Maxine (Angelina Jolie), an American filmmaker, who “discovers she has breast cancer and is drawn into an unexpected connection with a familiar collaborator (Louis Garrel)”; Ada (Anyier Anei), an aspiring model, escaping a predetermined future back home in South Sudan; and Angèle (Ella Rumpf), a makeup artist working in the shadows of the catwalks.

“As their paths cross, the film reveals the quiet resilience beneath the surface of public performance and honors the unspoken solidarity shared among these women across professions, cultures and continents,” the film’s synopsis says.
