Lisa Marie Presley struggled with an addiction to drugs, which her mom Priscilla Presley has now opened up about in her memoir.
Softly, As I Leave You: Life After Elvis is Priscilla’s new book in which she discusses her marriage to Elvis Presley, her dating experiences after Elvis’ death and her daughter’s struggles.
Lisa Marie first started struggling with drugs when she was in school. Priscilla revealed in her memoir that she enrolled her daughter in a local private school to try and solve the problem, but Lisa Marie found ways to get drugs there, too. Elsewhere in the book, Priscilla revealed what she wishes she could say to her daughter, who died in 2023.
Speaking about Lisa Marie’s addiction, Priscilla said, “Changing locations wasn’t solving the drug problem. They were available everywhere, and I finally realized that I was in denial about the problem.”
The 80-year-old admitted she didn’t want to believe her daughter was taking drugs and believed she had brought her up better.
Priscilla helped Lisa Marie to pack some clothes before checking her into the rehab program.
Lisa Marie was reluctant to join the program, which lasted several weeks, but Priscilla didn’t need her daughter’s permission to enrol her as she was only 17.
Priscilla explained how the people running the program put her daughter through a detox purification program and taught her about drugs. Lisa Marie was also taught communication skills and she was able to make friends at the facility, which Priscilla said “made a big difference.”
