A bear in Utah was safely relocated after she was spotted last week near an elementary school and in nearby residential areas, officials said.
The Moab City Police Department said the bear was initially reported at 339 McGill Boulevard at around 2:15 a.m. on Sept. 18. A Grand County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded and spotted the bear behind Helen M. Knight Elementary School before the animal went into a nearby backyard at Cliffview.
The Utah Division of Wildlife was notified and wildlife officers began searching for the bear. Police urged the public to assist by reporting any sightings.
Later Thursday night, at around 9:30 p.m., a resident on Chinle Avenue reported seeing the bear. A wildlife officer responded and found her in a tree. The officer sedated the bear, causing her to fall from the tree into an adjacent yard.
A wildlife biologist estimated the bear to be about nine years old. Police said the bear would be relocated to the Abajo Mountains Friday.
