Reality competition show The Voice is back.
The singing competition returned to NBC on Monday for its 28th season, starring Oklahoma icon Reba McEntire as one of four judges and coaches. The McAlester native and three-time Grammy award-winner has been on the show since 2023, winning her first season with Asher HaVon in 2024.
This season, the show is introducing some new rules, including the Carson Callback Card and the Mic Drop button, as well as the return of some coaches who had taken a break from the show.

Who are the coaches in ‘The Voice’ Season 28?
Many celebrities have taken on the role as judges and coaches for The Voice. Reba McEntire had her first season in 2023 during Season 24, where she coached alongside Gwen Stefani, John Legend and Niall Horan. She returned to the season after that to win with HaVon and in Season 26, before taking a break in Season 27. The country singer returned for Season 28.
Horan also took a break after Season 24. The former One Direction star got his start in a reality singing competition show, The X Factor, in the United Kingdom in 2010. He later won back-to-back seasons on The Voice.
Rapper Snoop Dogg joined the show on Season 26, but skipped 27. In his debut season, his artist Jeremy Beloate placed fifth, while fellow debutant Michael Bublé won with Sofronio Vasquez. Bublé has been on the show since then, and is the only returning judge from Season 27.
How is ‘The Voice’ switching it up this season?
Carson Daly has hosted The Voice since its inaugural season in 2011. This year, he’s been given some power.
The Voice’s blind auditions work with the four judges sitting in chairs, turning away from the contestants. Once a judge decides they want to coach the singer, or have them in their team moving on to the next round, they turn. If no one turns, the contestant doesn’t move forward — or at least didn’t. Now, if Daly sees a no-turn contestant he thinks deserves a second shot, he can give them the opportunity to take on another blind audition.
In the battles, where two contestants from one team go head to head for the coach to choose one to move along, the pairings used to be chosen by the coaches. This season, the contestants will be pairing up on their own choices.
In the knockouts, each judge will receive one Mic Drop to be used on a contestant from their team that blows them away. Just one. At the end of the season, fans will get to vote on their favorite out of the four, and the winner will be awarded a performance at The Rose Parade Presented by Honda on New Year’s Day.

The last change, ahead of the playoffs, will be the judges choosing one contestant from their team to advance to the Lives, with viewers voting for the fifth and the sixth. Last season, coaches got to choose two.
Horan and Snoop Dogg both said they would not be auditioning for the show if they were at the start of their careers.
