Victoria Beckham has spent decades in the public eye as a pop icon, fashion designer, and beauty mogul. In her new ELLE cover story, she reflected on her sweeping journey in the limelight and becoming a viral sensation after her Rolls-Royce moment in Netflix’s 2023 docuseries, Beckham.
The four-part series centered on Victoria’s husband, David, but the former Spice Girl drew attention for her exchange with the retired soccer player. During one of her confessionals, Victoria insists that she grew up working-class, prompting David to poke his head in and tell her to “be honest.” He urges her to say the type of car she rode to school in. Eventually, she reveals that her father drove a Rolls-Royce in the ’80s.
Thinking back on the moment, Victoria laughed and told ELLE, “Oh God, the Rolls-Royce? Even one of our children said, ‘How many times did you film that?’ We were like, ‘No, no. It wasn’t rehearsed.’”
The dance sequence to Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers’s “Islands in the Stream” was also a genuine moment, she added: “That’s what the Beckhams do. We like to have fun. We like to spend time all together. We’re a very traditional family, much more than I think people would realize.”
She also opened up about creating a supportive environment for her and David’s four children, now aged 14 to 26. “I’ve always tried to be the best mom and wife that I can be,” she said. “After my last show, I remember so vividly the kids and David coming backstage. I had just come off of my exit. And the looks on their faces when they approached me—it was a real pinch-me moment, because I saw how proud they were.”
Moments like that, she continued, highlight the values that guide her family life. “It’s healthy that the children know Daddy goes to work, and Mommy goes to work,” she said. “Working makes me the best version of me.”
Reflecting on her and David’s 26-year marriage, Victoria said growth and mutual support have sustained their bond: “He believed in me when a lot of people didn’t. He invested in me. At times I’ve been a laughingstock, people not taking my business seriously, but he always believed in me.”
Victoria, who will star in her own three-part Netflix docuseries, now seems to embrace her journey with more self-assurance. “Getting older is—actually, there’s a side of it that’s really great. The filter comes off, and you give a shit less. I’m really enjoying that,” she said.
