After a tumultuous season premiere that left fans with more questions than answers, High Potential opens up right where they left off last week in the second episode of season two. Karadec (Daniel Sunjata) is still in pursuit of Derek Price, the ex-husband of a missing woman named Maya who Morgan (Kaitlin Olson) is convinced has been abducted by the seemingly-sinister Game Maker (played by David Giuntoli).

But there’s also the matter of locating Morgan’s ex, Roman Sinquerra, who is now believed to be alive despite disappearing years ago. Will anything be resolved by the end of this episode? Let’s dig in.

First, a little refresh to catch up from last week

Derek, Maya’s ex, has just stolen a gun planted by The Game Maker at Maya’s home. He’s currently hunting down her boss Jason, whom The Game Maker has led him to believe murdered her. When Karadec finally thinks he has Derek cornered, there’s no one in the car, and the detective has to return to the precinct to let the rest of the squad know he’s lost eyes on him. Unfortunately, this is only one of the many problems the team is facing in The Game Maker case.

Speaking of whom, just when Morgan thinks she’ll never be able to pin down The Game Maker, he shows up at the precinct on his own free will. Introducing himself as Matthew Clark, Lieutenant Soto and Morgan get to work on running a background check while they await Karadec’s return. It turns out he has no prior arrests and works cash jobs. However, his mother did time for grand theft but passed away while she was in prison.

Once Karadec is back, he leads an interrogation of Clark, aka The Game Maker.

“I’ve got nothing to hide, so why was my face on the news?” asks Clark, as Karadec sets out to question him.

Karadec tries to connect Clark with the three people he allegedly abducted the week before, all of whom are members of the same grief group. As The Game Maker continues to toy with Karadec, he then asks for a snack … something “Pillsbury”.

Morgan connects his mention of Pillsbury with the Pillsbury Variation, a chess move she believes is another part of his game. Ultimately, she thinks it means they need to release Jason (the man they initially arrested for Maya’s disappearance), despite the fact that Derek is on the run looking to kill him.

Do Daphne and Oz find Roman in Nevada?

The answer here is both yes and no. We see Daphne and Oz waiting outside a hotel room registered to one Roman Sinquerra, played by Mekhi Phifer. After knocking on what they presume to be his door, Roman doesn’t answer. Not ones to give up, they wait in their car, until he peeks his head out of the room.

Once Roman finally leaves the room, Daphne and Oz follow him. But when approached, he shrugs them off and heads into a random building. They send Morgan a photo of the man they’ve identified as Roman but she tells them it isn’t him.

“I’ve never seen that man before in my life,” Morgan says.

What’s The Game Maker’s next move?

Morgan gets a call from her son, Elliott, asking if he’s allowed to leave the house in order to participate in his school’s talent show the following day, which Morgan agrees to despite some hesitation. But she’s distracted by The Game Maker, still sitting in the interrogation room, who is asking to speak to someone.

Morgan and Karadec are then pulled away from the precinct because of a bomb threat on an LA Metro bus, which Soto believes could be connected to the Game Maker. The bomb squad uncovers the ticking package, which just contains a timer and a thumb drive attached to it. On the thumb drive is a video of Maya, who is bound, singing the ’80s hit “Bizarre Love Triangle” by New Order. This clicks with Morgan because earlier The Game Maker made mention of love triangles when being questioned by Karadec.

With the timer still running down and two hours left on it, the bomb squad says the bag is covered in a substance used to make explosives, so there is still danger, somewhere.

Clues from Maya’s video lead them back to Jason’s house, where Karadec’s car that’s parked in Jason’s driveway promptly explodes when the timer goes off. They bring Jason back to the station to offer him protection but he hires his own private security and leaves. Sitting in a car outside the police station is Derek, who proceeds to follow Jason away from the precinct.

When do things start to click for Morgan regarding The Game Maker?

After a conversation with her son Elliott, Morgan decides to pay a visit to The Game Maker’s apartment. There, she tells Matthew Clark that she quits, she swerved in his game of Chicken; he won—tell her where he’s keeping Maya. He says he doesn’t know anything about Maya’s disappearance, but suggests she takes the stairs instead of the elevator. While traversing the stairs she hears “Bizarre Love Triangle” playing from an allegedly vacant apartment. Beating on the door she tries to get to Maya, who she knows has to be inside, while Karadec is en route to Jason’s hotel to protect him from Derek.

Just as Derek is about to kill Jason, Karadec and Jason’s security team pounce. At the same time, Morgan is able to reach Maya and tell Derek she’s alive over Karadec’s phone. After rattling off a bunch of personal information, Derek finally believes she’s alive and backs off.

Maya doesn’t have a scratch on her, leaving the squad to wonder how there was blood on her clothing in the trunk of the car. So Morgan goes back to see The Game Maker where she confronts him for stealing blood from the hospital where he volunteers, which happens to be the same hospital where Maya donates blood.

“I was just texting with my partner and they checked the footage at the hospital,” Morgan tells him. “Sure enough, there you are—stealing Maya’s blood. So officers will be here any minute to arrest you.”

What happens to The Game Maker?

The Game Maker says he won’t die in prison like his mother, and attempts to take his own life by throwing himself off of his apartment balcony. However, Morgan assumed this is the route he would take, and he lands on an inflatable bed set up by police. Then, he is promptly arrested.

In what should be a happy ending to the episode at Elliott’s against-all-odds successful talent show performance, Mekhi Phifer’s character shows up. Morgan pulls him aside to ask who he is. He says his name is Arthur and that the real Roman has told him that Morgan is the only person in the world he trusts.

“Roman asked me to put eyes on you and Ava just to make sure you two were ok,” he says.

After giving her his card for a lawn business, Arthur slinks away, leaving another very personal mystery for Morgan to solve.
