It’s time to get up and dance, Toronto. A new bar just opened in the city and it has live music every night.
Dina’s Tavern opened its doors on Sept. 18 and comes from the team behind Toronto’s Track & Field Bar, Bangarang and Hail Mary.
And whether it be a local band, a jazz trio, karaoke or a DJ spinning Motown and soul, the bar plans to have audiences rockin’ out each and every night they’re open with live entertainment.
The new spot is located at 468 Spadina Ave., where iconic The Silver Dollar Room used to be.
“There are aspects of the space people will recognize from back in the day — the layout, the bar. We also have plans to maintain a weekly bluegrass show, like the Dollar had for decades,” says Nickie Marshall, one of the bar’s owners alongside Jesse Borg and Tasha Potter.
“That said, the intention with Dina’s isn’t to replicate the historic Silver Dollar. We’re just happy to be turning the space back into a place where you can hear some good music and have a good time. It feels like a victory.”
And the bar’s booker, Nick McKinlay, agrees. McKinlay has been playing music in Toronto for 17 years and many of those shows were performed at the Spadina Avenue venue before it was transformed into Dina’s.
“A consensus among many of us in the scene is that Toronto is sorely lacking smaller capacity venues — places where musicians, both new and seasoned, can develop and work,” McKinlay tells Toronto.com.
“The goal at Dina’s is to provide a low-barrier live music experience for the audiences and artists alike.”
When it comes to the beverages, visitors can treat themselves to Dina’s martini menu when feeling classy or go for a cheap pitcher of beer. There’s also a $7 Highlife, a Diner Coffee Negroni and a Tequila Sunrise on the menu.
And if you’re wondering who Dina is, all you have to do is take a look at the bar’s logo to find out.
“After Jesse, Tasha and I decided on the name Dina’s Tavern, Tasha said ‘What if Dina is a rat smoking a cigarette’ and it just fit,” says Marshall.
Dina’s is open from Monday to Saturday from 6 p.m. to late. So, whether you’re looking for a cheap drink in Toronto or to dance the night away, maybe Dina’s Tavern will be your next spot to check out in the city. Don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for Dina!
