Everyone’s favourite southern rock band from East Texas, Whiskey Myers, bring you eleven guitar-driven tracks on new album ‘Whomp Whack Thunder’ that will whomp you right in your solar plexus, shattering nerves with the beauty of music done absolutely right.
With 18 years and seven albums behind the six-piece, Whiskey Myers have captivated crowds of music fans across the world with their songwriting, ‘70s guitar sound and iconic vocals. Album five, the self-titled and self-produced Whiskey Myers, hit the top spots on Billboard Country and Billboard Rock charts in 2019 with their sixth album Tornillo expanding to include progressive experimentalism in 2022.
Chasing riffs, slides and demons alike in their stance-making, Whiskey Myers evoke the ‘60s and ‘70s rhythm and blues sound of Skynyrd, Allman, Williams Jr. and Jennings as naturally as that supergroup lineup would suggest, on ‘Whomp Whack Thunder.’
Why open an album with one high-energy, bone-shaking song when you kick down the door with three heart-pounding statements? Current singles ‘Time Bomb’ and ‘Tailspin’ are joined by ‘I Got To Move’ to provide eleven minutes of heaven for guitar heroes and drummers, led by Cody Cannon’s trademark caramelised rye vocals.
The pace slows, briefly – necessarily, thinking of stage performances – on the ballad ‘Rowdy Days’, with the slide guitar knowing how to perfectly dance around Cannon’s voice. I’m hearing ‘70s Seeger’s nostalgia and lyrical insights and that’s never a bad thing.
‘Icarus’ also explores the wise life of musicians who are perhaps chased by ghosts of ambition, as the Greek myth character’s story highlights, but have survived to live a content life.
Album highlights are the killer ‘Midnight Woman’, which calls on the spirits of a soulful Deep Purple, an organ joining in the fun to deliver this blizzard of driving sound, which serves to both ground the album in classic territory and elevate it to a wider audience with a blues-rock leaning. The track is swiftly followed by the frenetic and beautifully controlled ‘Break These Chains’.
On an on-repeat album, ‘Born To Do’ is one of the best songs on ‘Whomp Whack Thunder,’ giving Kenny Roger’s Gambler and Bob Dylan picking energy, putting forth the absolute that Whiskey Myers is doing exactly what they and us need – putting out honest music that reverberates throughout the soul.
But the album isn’t finished yet, as the blues guitar ballad ‘Rock N Roll’, with its poetic lyricism and polished musicianship narrates the story of this beloved genre through a unique literary perspective; listen carefully to the character in the songwriting.
The hard work of the band is the subject of ‘Ramblin’ Jones’, celebrating their 18 years of music through this hammer of a song; they can’t help but enjoy the road. And it’s time for that long-overdue UK tour, lads.
